Beethoven’s FIDELIO
June 2-10, 2023

Director: Douglas Anderson
Conductor: Filippo Ciabatti

Fidelio is a dramatic story of heroism, love, and freedom inspired by a true story.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera celebrates the extraordinary victory and bravery of Leonore who, disguised as a young man named Fidelio, works in a prison where she suspects her husband Florestan is being held as a political prisoner. She eventually finds him there and discovers he has been ordered to be murdered by the tyrannous governor Don Pizarro. Through her bravery and determination, Leonore restores justice.

Glory Denied is a poignant saga that takes place during the Vietnam War, based on the true story of Colonel Jim Thompson, America’s longest-held prisoner of war.

This profoundly moving story and soaring score by one of America’s leading classical voice composers, Tom Cipullo, tells Thompson’s story through younger and older versions of Thompson and his wife, Alyce, who traverse this complex emotional landscape through hope, despair, love, hate, courage, and forgiveness.
