Chaz’men Williams-Ali’s 2024-25 Season includes First Prisoner/Florestan (c) Fidelio at Washington National Opera, soloist in a special project titled “My Brother’s Keeper” with New York Festival of Song, his Puccini recital with Chicago Opera Theatre, his debut in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Wisconsin Youth Symphony, and his debut as Raymond Santana Central Park Five at Detroit Opera. Emily Michiko Jensen
Mimì
Japanese-American soprano Emily Michiko Jensen has been praised for her “theatrical instincts and intriguingly versatile instrument.” Last season, she joined Hawai’i Opera Theatre as Mimì (La bohème) and Borderlands Arts Foundation as Musetta. Emily was a 2023-24 Emerging Artist at Boston Lyric Opera, where she covered Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly. She is a 2023 career grant recipient of the Olga Forrai Foundation. In 2022, she returned to Chautauqua Opera to cover the title role of Tosca. She also sang Angel More and covered Susan B. Anthony (The Mother of Us All). While a Resident Artist at Pensacola Opera, she sang First Lady and covered Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), and performed Wagner’s Die Wesendonck lieder at the Opera Center.

Spencer Reichman is a talented baritone from Austin, Texas. In 2024, he joined the Florentine Opera as Biscroma Strappaviscere in Viva la Mamma, returned to New Orleans Opera as Sciarrone in Tosca, sang the title role in Zozobra: The Revenge at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, and was heard as Le Baron de Pictordu in Cendrillon at Knoxville Opera. In 2023, he covered Ophémon in The Anonymous Lover and Orpheus in Aucoin’s Eurydice at Boston Lyric Opera, sang the Huntsman in Rusalka and Sacristan in Tosca, with the Santa Fe Opera, Germont in La traviata with Shreveport Opera, made a debut as Mr. Ford in Falstaff with Salt Marsh Opera and sang Paris in Roméo et Juliette with Opera San Antonio. Role highlights include Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Central City and Shreveport Operas, Sprecher in Magic Flute with Pensacola Opera, Schaunard in La bohème with New Orleans Opera Association, and the title role in Gianni Schicchi with Loyola Opera Theatre. Chelsea Basler

Grammy Award-nominated soprano Chelsea Basler continues to make her mark in an array of operatic roles and is praised for her “luminous voice” with its “easy soaring range” and “wonderful acting.” This season she will sing the role of Musetta in La bohème with Charleston Opera Theater and Opera Company of Middlebury, sing the soprano solo in Elijah with the AVM Singers and sing High Priestess in Aida and cover Julie Jordan in Carousel with Boston Lyric Opera. She most recently was a featured soloist in a concert with The Providence Singers, covered the title role in Aucoin’s Eurydice with Boston Lyric Opera, and made her role debut as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte with Newport Classical. Ms. Basler enjoys a strong relationship with Boston Lyric Opera, which she initially joined as an emerging artist during the 2013–2014 season. Max van Wyck

A native Vancouverite, Baritone Max van Wyck’s love for performing and his passion for music has led him across Canada, through Toronto to the L’Opéra de Montréal, where he was thrilled to continue maturing as an artist before moving to Europe. After singing non-stop for 18 months in numerous productions in Germany, he relocated back to the United States to be with his wife and puppy. Max is excited to be singing back in North America, with contracts across the United States for the 2024/25 season. He started off singing in Le Nozze de Figaro, with Buffalo Unlimited Opera, making his New York City debut in Carmen with Lighthouse Opera, before moving into the production of Gianni Schicchi with Opera West in New Mexico, and in Romeo et Juliette, with Bel Cantanti in Washington DC. Younggwang Park is a talented young bass from South Korea, whose impressive vocal abilities have earned him numerous accolades. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Seoul National University and a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School. In 2024, he sang Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte and Benoit/Colline in La bohème with Opera San Jose. Additional roles include Gianni Schicchi, Diarte in Erismena, and Pastore in Orfeo at the Santa Fe Opera and Mercurio in Atalanta and Joe in Later the Same Evening at The Juilliard School. Park’s competition successes include winning the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Georgia District) in 2022, 3rd in the Southeast Region of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in 2023, an Encouragement Award at the Giulio Gari Vocal Competition and 2nd at the Opera at Florham International Vocal Competition. James Demler

Bass-baritone James Demler is known for his “versatile and tender” portrayals with “dark, imposing tones” in repertory spanning the operatic, oratorio, concert, and popular music genres (The New Criterion, Boston Musical Intelligencer). In the 2023-2024 season, Mr. Demler joined Boston Lyric Opera to sing Alidoro in La Cenerentola, showing “vocal gravitas…he gained audiences precisely through a charming clumsiness similar to Merlin in The Sword in the Stone” (Operawire). He made his Opera Orlando debut as Vodnik in Rusalka and joined the Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra in the title role in Elijah. In the current season, he returns to the Metropolitan Opera covering Benoit and Alcindoro in La bohème and appears in the foley chamber opera Silent Light with National Sawdust. He will debut the role of Morris in the West Coast premiere of Adoration with Los Angeles Opera, sing Monterone in Rigoletto with Pacific Opera Victoria, and sing Benoit and Alcindoro with Opera Company of Middlebury. Arielle Hanudel is a pianist and violinist who holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Crane School of Music. She has taught piano at St. Michael’s College and in her private studio, as well as working as a wedding musician and accompanist. Arielle recently began studying voice with Victoria Drew. La Bohème will be her first opera experience.
Eve Mengüç is thrilled to make their OCM debut in La Bohème. At 15, Eve is a freshman at Middlebury Union High School and regularly participates in local theater opportunities. You may have experienced their crusade against pool as Harold Hill in last summer's THT Young Company production of The Music Man. This is Eve’s second opera, having played Second Woman in the 2024 OCM Youth Opera Company’s Dido and Aeneas Project. Eve is grateful to their family, and everyone within OCM.

Mezzo soprano Amanda Cabán, OCM Young Artist, is an accomplished performer based in Chicago, IL, known for her rich color and expressive voice. Some of her notable roles are Candela (El Amor Brujo), Ma Moss (The Tenderland), Old Lady (Candide), Meg (Falstaff), Carmen (Carmen), Dorabella (Così fan Tutte), and Cherubino (Marriage of Figaro). Cabán has also appeared as the soloist for works such as: the Ellingboe Requiem, Saint-Saëns' Christmas Oratorio, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, and the Mozart Requiem. This is Jennifer Carpenter’s debut with OCM. Jennifer has sung in ensembles in the U.S. and abroad, under the direction of conductors including Peter Phillips, Robert Porco, and Dr. Mark Shapiro. She currently sings in Vermont Symphony Chorus and has sung with Solaris Vocal Ensemble. While obtaining her MM in Choral Conducting at Indiana University at Bloomington, she sang with the University Singers, Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, and the International Vocal Ensemble.
Heralded by Opera News for their “lush” voice, Melina Jaharis, OCM Young Artist, is a Greek-American with a “rich, dark, resonant” mezzo soprano. This season includes world premieres, Beyond the Horizon and Tin Angel with Teatro Grattacielo, as well as Marcellina. Additionally, Melina will be joining Heartbeat Opera as the Page & Slave and Herodias cover. Mezzo soprano Lori Marino recently appeared as alto soloist for Vermont Philharmonic’s 2024 performance of Hӓndel’s Messiah. She has performed in OCM’s La fille du régiment, Fidelio and Tosca. Upcoming roles include Dorabella in Così fan tutte. Lori teaches voice at the University of Vermont and is a Membership Director for NATS. Lori earned a Performance degree from Ithaca College and a Master’s in Voice Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College. Lori studies with Amy Zorn and worked with Trish McCaffrey and Alan Bowers. Lori resides in Williston with her husband Greg and four children.

Tenor Héctor Camacho-Salazar, OCM Young Artist and Rodolfo cover, is a graduate student from Bogotá, Colombia pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Literature at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Recently, Héctor performed the roles of Ali Hakim (Oklahoma!), The Time Traveler (Black Square), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), and Burrs (The Wild Party). At the University of Illinois, he has performed in many productions in both opera and musical theatre, earning him several merit-based awards.
Tenor Brian Clancy has sung in choral ensembles all his life. A Philadelphia native, he enjoyed six years with the resident chorus of the Philadelphia Orchestra, singing at the Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center. He wrote a dissertation on American opera houses for his Ph.D. in architectural history at Rutgers. Since moving to New Hampshire in 2002, Brian has sung with several groups, including NH Master Chorale, Handel Society, Counterpoint, Upper Valley Baroque, and Tessitura.
This is tenor Matt DeDiana’s second season with the Opera Company of Middlebury. Last year, he sang with the OCM chorus in La Fille du Régiment, and now he’s back again for La Bohème. Matt resides in Williston, VT with his wife, Kristin, and their daughters, Maris and Selene. You can find Matt outside of opera making music with others in Northern Vermont, at the ice rink with his kids, and relaxing next to the fire.
Tenor Ted Marcy is pleased to be in the chorus of this production of La Bohème, one of his favorite operas. Ted has enjoyed a rich experience in vocal performances since his retirement as a pulmonary physician. He sings with the VSO chorus, Mad River Chorale, and the South Burlington Community Chorus, and performed in the chorus of HMS Pinafore, L'elisir d'amore, and Pirates of Penzance at Unadilla Theater. He thanks his wife, Kim, for her forbearance.
Aidan McAuliffe is a 24-year-old tenor based in Vermont. His repertoire includes Vivaldi’s Gloria at Carnegie Hall in 2022, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at Troy Music Hall in 2023 with Albany Pro Musica, and Mozart’s Requiem at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in 2024 as a member of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus of which he is still a member.

Chinese baritone Lifan Deng, OCM Young Artist and Schaunard cover, holds a Master of Music in Voice and Opera from Northwestern University and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Music from Case Western Reserve University. Gregory Gropper, OCM Young Artist and Marcello cover, is an American baritone, based in NYC. A graduate of University of Michigan BM, and Manhattan School of Music MM, Gregory played the title role in Der Kaiser von Atlantis at MSM in ’24 as well as the title role in Gianni Schicchi at Berlin Opera Academy summer ’24. When he’s not singing or learning music, you can find him on the basketball court.
Neil Wacek appeared in the ensemble of ten OCM productions from 2008 to 2024: La Bohème, Thais, L’italiana in Algeri, Turandot, Macbeth, Cendrillon, Candide, Orphée aux enfers, Fidelio and La fille du régiment. Neil is a frequent vocal soloist with many professional and community ensembles around Vermont and a member of Counterpoint. An accomplished trumpet player, Neil performs regularly with numerous instrumental ensembles. He is Director of the University of Vermont Pep Band and resides in Shelburne.
Allan Wieman sings with numerous ensembles throughout New England: Tanglewood Festival Chorus, Counterpoint, Handel Society of Dartmouth, Upper Valley Baroque, and Tessitura. Recent solo work includes J.S. Bach Cantatas 56 and 82, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem, and Faure’s Requiem. He has sung the Count in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, and Belcore in Donizetti’s L’Elisir D’Amore, He is very excited to be making his first appearance with the Opera Company of Middlebury.
